Why not go for artificial grass?

So, you are watching that soccer game and admiring just how to beautify the pitch looks. The perfectly mowed grass that looks fresh and green. You wonder how wonderful It would be if you had such beautiful grass in your own residence. Well, what you just saw was most likely artificial or synthetic grass. It was so real it fooled you into believing it was the real thing. You are not alone, with new generation artificial grass, it takes trained eyes to make a difference between the fake grass and the real one. The use of synthetic grass is becoming more popular. Today you can find them not only in sports arenas but equally in residential areas and public spaces including parks.

The lush velvety green lawns in high-end residential areas are of course artificial, at least most of the time. This is the new way of making hitherto barren landscapes clean and attractive to just about any eye.

This was initially being used only in certain sporting arena creeping slowly into popular culture. It was not until much later in the 80s that many residential areas, especially the high-end zones began using this type of surfacing. Today, it is quite a commonplace to see this synthetic grass adorning the landscapes of some even very low key areas. It didn't just happen. As the middle class became wealthier, they adopted the luxuries of the wealthiest in the country which included making use of synthetic grass for their lawns. Seeing this growth, many companies came up to join the few who were operating at that time. Many of such companies still exist today only operating under different names. It is becoming classy and even a show of class to have such synthetic fibers adorning your courtyard.

What is artificial grass?

This is the name given to synthetically produced material made to look and feel like natural grass. The synthetic fibers used for this purpose use about the same processes as used for carpet production. This process was initiated by the Chemstrand Company in early 1960,s. It proceeded to improve the technology, streamlining it to suit the demand at that time which was initially limited. They moved on to an even better technology that changed the world of synthetic grass forever.

They introduced the tufting process in which a large number of needles are used to insert filaments of fibre into fabric backing. A flexible adhesive like polyurethane or polyvinyl Chloride is used to bind the fibers to the backing. A tufting machine can produce a 15ft wide and 3ft long turf in one minute. The first of such turfs was installed at the Moses Brown School in Providence in 1964 and was called Chemgrass.

What synthetic grass looks like today.

The newest synthetic turf products have been chemically treated to be resistant to ultraviolet rays, more wear resistant, less abrasive and more similar to natural grass. Many different companies are now producing artificial grass and whole industries have come up around the installation. There are many different designs available with different strengths.

Why get artificial grass.

Growing up in the earlier years playing around on fields of natural grass was some of our favorite moments. Today, children and even adults find that same joy spending time on beautifully mowed lawns at home or some park somewhere . What has changed though is that, the luxury of being on natural grass is mostly gone but thankfully it has been replaced by an even more luxurious grass look alike. So you may be asking your self why you should consider an artificial grass lawn.

  • Maybe you are environment conscious and you know keeping lawns of natural grass may mean disaster to the environment. The use of fertilizers on the lawns mean that in the long run, the subsoil will be completely destroyed and dependent on even more fertilizer. Also, the use of the mowing machine means a lot of gas or electric power is needed which most often far outweighs the oxygen benefits that the use of natural grass for landscaping could have produced. This is one reason most municipalities are beginning to consider artificial grass for open spaces to reduce pollution and engage in more eco-friendly methods of making open spaces green.
  • To buttress the above point for environment freaks, the material used for the production of artificial fibre is mostly gotten from recycled plastic materials, meaning by buying artificial grass you will be promoting an industry that is helping clean the environment.
  • The aesthetic value cannot be overestimated. It is beautiful to look at. With the turfs coming now looking so natural and with particular lengths, you have a lawn that never changes. It remains fresh and green, always with very little efforts needed to keep it that beautiful.
  • It is very economical. Apart from the initial cost of installation, there is really nothing much to do. It is estimated to last for about 15 to 25 years from installation. This can mean only one thing, more money in your pockets. With no watering, no use of fertilizers nor any mowing and just occasional washing, you are sure to get top value for your money.
  • It is safe for children, dogs or anybody who intends playing on it. No chemicals are ever used on it, so your child can have all the fun they can play on the turf.

Though we have some disadvantages using artificial grass like making the ground underneath hotter especially in hot zones, the advantages generally outweigh the disadvantages. It makes good economic and environmental sense to use this new way of making our residential landscapes beautiful. There is no point engaging in the perpetual expenditure by having natural grass lawns instead of investing in a one time venture with good returns. Go for synthetic, it is the new face of residential surfacing and no more reserved only for the sporting arenas.
